Headed Out

Tomorrow is the day.

Seattle to Amsterdam to Khartoum to Addis Ababa.

So many thanks—in advance—to Tim and Muriel Tusink, in Addis. I’m sure, when I arrive, the 20-hour jet-lag fog will be thick and I will so appreciate the ride from the airport directly to a bed!

I am leaving the U.S. after a spectacular long weekend reunion with friends in New Mexico. It is no mystery to anyone reading this that—more than anything in the world—landscape is what makes me sing.

My friend Lesley said this place (above) is how she imagines East Africa. She is not far off. If I could change the trees, even I could be fooled.

Landscape is our shared treasure. If we can’t be drawn together by politics and culture, surely landscape will do it.

More soon, from Ethiopia.
