Well, we've had a bit of a lazy day today--for a change. Mike is on-call this weekend so we're just hanging around Kijabe, enjoying the view over the Rift Valley and catching up on our reading. The highlight of the day, however, was our visit to John and Leah Njoroge's house on the hill above Kijabe, just next to the railroad tracks.

John is an old friend of Daniel's. When we were all here in 2004, Daniel roamed the jungle around Kijabe with John and another young man named Kim. Back then, John taught Daniel how to make dik-dik traps and the boys shot sling shots at the monkeys in the trees. Now, six years later, John is married and has a nine month old daughter! How fast things change! We met up with both John and Kim this last week and today we walked to John's house for a visit. Leah served us chai (of course!) and warm maandazis (sort of a Kenyan donut. I have, by the way, become hooked again on Kenyan chai. I can't pinpoint the difference between Kenyan tea and British tea, but Kenyan tea is different. And better. Maybe it's all that milk and sugar . . . )

Daniel--I hope you're checking the blog and see these photos. John is living in the same house you visited in 2004, but he's added a little bedroom extension onto it where John and his wife and little Esther all sleep. They have 3 chickens and a sheep in a coop outside their front door and a substantial shamba where they grow maize, sugarcane, sukuma wiki and sweet potatoes. We had a lovely visit and--as we have this whole trip--we really missed you!
